There are 2 game modes (for now) single player and multi player. in single player a random world is generated and you decide the aim of the game, you might search for resources and make weapons and armor and mine to the center of the earth or you could save them build a giant castle it can be 2 kinds of game adventure or construction, in multi player it is the same concept but your friends can join you and you can use commands to give people items, teleport each other and change the time of day.
Minecraft overall is a massive game with endless things to do and its still in beta so theres still more to come! there a rumored game modes such as adventure and capture the flag, Notch has also confirmed he is working on a new mob: wolves! and also achievements and stats.
